WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE & TCM?

Integrative Care for the Whole Person.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive system of healthcare developed over thousands of years, encompassing acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, and lifestyle practices. Its underlying framework describes health as the smooth, balanced flow of vital energy — or qi — through a network of channels called meridians that traverse the body. When this flow becomes disrupted by stress, injury, emotional disturbance, or environmental factors, the result is pain, dysfunction, or disease. Acupuncture restores balance by stimulating specific points along these meridians using fine, sterile needles.

From a Western medical perspective, acupuncture's mechanisms are increasingly well understood. The insertion of needles at specific anatomical sites activates sensory nerve fibres, triggers the release of endorphins and enkephalins (the body's natural pain-relieving compounds), modulates the activity of the autonomic nervous system, and stimulates local tissue repair processes. Functional imaging studies show measurable changes in brain activity following acupuncture treatment — particularly in areas associated with pain processing, emotional regulation, and interoception. This is why acupuncture is effective not just for physical pain but for conditions with strong neurological and emotional components like anxiety, insomnia, and stress.

Mei-Ling Chen's practice bridges these two perspectives. She conducts a full TCM assessment — examining pulse quality, tongue appearance, constitutional factors, and the pattern of your symptoms — while also drawing on her knowledge of Western anatomy and physiology to refine point selection and technique. This integrative approach means that patients with conditions resistant to conventional treatment often find real, lasting relief through TCM care.

Mei-Ling is particularly known for her work with patients managing chronic pain, anxiety and burnout, hormonal health concerns, and fertility support. She believes that acupuncture works best when the patient understands what is being done and why — her sessions always include an explanation of the treatment rationale and a discussion of supportive lifestyle practices. An informed patient is an empowered patient, and empowered patients get better results.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your First Acupuncture Visit.

Your first visit is unhurried. Mei-Ling takes a full picture of your health before any needles are placed.

1

Full TCM Health Intake

Your first session includes an in-depth health intake that covers not only your primary concerns but your overall health pattern — sleep quality, digestion, energy levels, emotional wellbeing, menstrual health (where relevant), and constitutional tendencies. Mei-Ling will take your pulse at both wrists (assessing 12 different pulse qualities) and examine your tongue, which in TCM provides a window into the health of internal organ systems. This detailed picture informs every subsequent aspect of care.

2

Meridian Assessment & Point Selection

Based on her TCM assessment, Mei-Ling identifies the pattern of disharmony underlying your symptoms and selects a group of acupuncture points to address it. She explains her reasoning in accessible terms so you understand what the treatment is doing and why. The needles used are sterile, single-use, and extremely fine — most patients are surprised by how comfortable the process is. A typical session involves 10–20 needles retained for 20–30 minutes while you rest in a warm, quiet treatment room.

3

Treatment Plan & Follow-Up

After your treatment, Mei-Ling will outline a recommended course of care. Many patients notice a shift in their symptoms after 3–6 sessions; chronic or complex conditions may require a longer course. She'll also share dietary and lifestyle recommendations aligned with your TCM pattern — practical guidance that supports the work done in the treatment room and accelerates progress between sessions.
